Sunrise Blessings

Golden sunrises grace the skies of my toy laden backyard each and every chilly, spring morning.  Streaming through the wooden fence and vines, over the playset and right into my corner window. I try to sit in the corner cotton chair to soak it all in on the quiet mornings but miss it more days than I like.  My cozy, warm bed keeps me and my loud boys dance around me while someone is inevitably crying for help with breakfast. I quickly get lost in the loud morning rush of breakfast and packing lunch and checking homework while tripping over shoes. I glance over at that window that beckons me over to the light for a moment but ignore its plea. Instead I hurry, I rush, and I start my day with a whirlwind of thoughts. My ‘to do list’ grows by the minute and my heart walks further away from that warm sunlight shining through.
You know what I miss in those golden sunrises shining through my window? The very peace of Jesus. His peace, beckoning me to come near, to sit with Him for a while so He can whisper His love to me. I miss those few moments of His face shining upon me and warming my face and my very soul. I cherish the moments I can sit alone in that corner chair with the warm sunlight shining through, when my baby sits on my lap and enjoys it too, and when I enjoy it from the minivan instead because I overslept. Each time I see that golden sunrise I think of Jesus entering my little day with those streams of sunlight. I think of this priestly blessing in Numbers 6:24-26:
‘“The Lord bless you
    and keep you;
25 the Lord make his face shine on you
    and be gracious to you;
26 the Lord turn his face toward you
    and give you peace.”’ (NIV)

I think of The Father and ask Him to bless my day and keep me in His very hand in every moment. I think of His Son’s face smiling down, giving gifts of grace to me when I am short with my child, not kind enough to a coworker or too hard on myself.  I think of His Spirit being with me throughout my day, comforting me and guiding me and filling me with His beautiful peace. As summer days get longer and more filled with sunlight, I like to think it’s more of a chance to see the sun and be reminded of Jesus. Each time we see a sunrise, sunset, or a stream of light through a window, may we be reminded of His warm, smiling face shining upon us, within us, and beside us.
