Just Breathe

Breath in, breath out.

Sometimes it was all I could manage to do.
Fear, pain, doubt, unshakable worry was a dark black wall right in front of my face just a few short years ago.
I couldn't see past it- it was closing in on me.

All I could do was close my eyes, breathe in deeply through my nose and as I felt my chest expand and then let go. I emptied myself and Christ filled me. His face shone more and more from behind the dark cloudy wall with every breath in and out. Breath prayer.

Breath prayer is one, two or a few words you repeat over and over and over slowly as you breathe.
It is rhythmic. It is soul filling. It is peaceful.

The Bible says to pray without ceasing, it also says not to worry but to present your requests to God. Breath prayer is a perfect way to do so when you are so overwhelmed you don't know what to pray or where to begin. Here are some examples:
"The peace of God"
"Holy God, thank you"
"I trust you"
"Abba Father, guide me"
Or simply, "Jesus."

Breath prayer carried me through one of the most difficult valleys in my life.
Many life changing, big decisions.

I suppose I should use breath prayer more often as a mother of three boys three and under. The moments I feel I cannot handle one more whine, diaper change or Mighty Machines. Breath prayer.
The moments my heart is full of laughter and awe of them. Breathe prayer.

Pray without ceasing.

Whatever, wherever, whenever- He is beside you. Talk to Him. Even if you are so broken all you can manage is to just breathe.

This ones long but a favorite:

Numbers 6:24

 ‘ “The Lord bless you

and keep you;

 The Lord make his face shine on you

and be gracious to you;

 The Lord turn his face toward you

and give you peace.”

Recently I shared breath prayer with someone I love who is going through a trial. Below is her breath prayer. Tonight, I pray it alongside her and I ask you do as well. Peace and grace to you.

31 Isaiah says,
"but those who hope in the Lord
    will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
    they will run and not grow weary,
    they will walk and not be faint.
